My Favorite Hotel on the Via Veneto: The Hotel Majestic in Rome

Via Vittorio Veneto  called Via Veneto, is one of the most famous, elegant, and expensive streets of Rome. It is similar to the  Champs Elysee or the Fifth Avenue of Rome.

Federico Fellini‘s classic 1960 film La Dolce Vita or “the sweet life” or “the good life”. The film follows Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), a journalist writing for gossip magazines, over seven days and nights on his journey through the “sweet life” of Rome in a fruitless search for love and happiness.

My favorite hotel on the Via Veneto in Rome is the magical Majestic Hotel Roma. The Hotel Majestic inaugurated in 1889, was the first hotel that was built on the via Veneto. I love everything about this hotel! The rooftop “Via Veneto Terrace” restaurant is a perfect Vino con Vista destination! The lobby bar is amazing. The food is legendary. The furnishings are splendid.

“Sophia Loren is with Errol Flynn and Audrey Hepburn with Anthony Quinn”. That mythical ditty sums up the recent history of the via Veneto short boulevard which is the Champs Elysee or the Fifth Avenue of Rome.

It’s located on the Via Venato just steps away from Piazza Barberini with two Bernini fountains: The large Fontana del Tritons pictured at the top of this post (1622) and the Fontana delle Api (1627)  is shaped like a shell and covered with Barberini bees.

The elegant hotel is within walking distance of the Villa Borghese,  located in the third largest public park in Rome with magnificent gardens. You can admire many of Bernini’s sculptures at the Villa.

The lobby and guestrooms of the hotel are furnished with elegant antiques and the service is impecable. The hallways are filled with framed photos of the filming of the movie “La Dolce Vita”.

You don’t even have to tell the people at the front desk your room number when you pick up your key because they remember your name. They also appreciate an update on all the great tourist spots you racked up in Rome. They were able to get me tickets to the Carravagio Exhibition and were thrilled to know that I write travel guides about Italy.

My favorite Bob Dylan lyrics are “Go away from my window-leave at your own chosen speed. I’m not the one you long for–not the one you need”.  Do you remember that one? Check  out the live version of “It Ain’t Me Babe” on YouTube–
