Visit Red Mountain AVA Wineries in Washington State for the Perfect Vino con Vista

More than 17,000 vineyard acres are grown within the boundaries of the Yakima Valley appellationwith more than 40 different white and red grape varieties represented.  While the Yakima Valley is Washington’s oldest AVA – authorized in 1983, the Red Mountain AVA, the Rattlesnake Hills AVA and the Snipes Mountain AVA all lie within within it.

The Yakima Valley AVA, in turn, is the largest sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA (established in 1984), both in total size and wine-grape acreage.  Other sub-appellations within Washington’s large Columbia Valley AVA include the Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and the Naches Heights AVAs.

The Red Mountain AVA is an American Viticultural Area that includes the land surrounding Red Mountain in Benton County, Washington. It is part of the Yakima Valley AVA, which in turn is part of the larger Columbia Valley AVA.

Here are some important facts:

  1. Located between Benton City and the City of West Richland, the Red Mountain AVA is the smallest in the state at only 4,040 acres.

2. The area has 600 acres under cultivation;  primarily red varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

3. The reputation of the wines produced in this area has brought Red Mountain AVA worldwide critical acclaim. The vineyards in this appellation have produced grapes for some of the most sought after wines in Washington State. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah create wines of superb concentration and depth

4. The Red Mountain AVA lies within the southeastern area of the Yakima Valley Appellation boundaries. It has a distinct micro-climate; the warmest wine-grape growing region in Washington.

   5. “Sloping lands beneath the broad Red Mountain lie at the southeast end of the Yakima Valley, overlooking Benton City, where annual rainfall is only about six inches, and supplemental irrigation is usually provided a few months into the growing season.”

Wines Northwest Editor’s note: Red Mountain Appellation was Washington State’s smallest viticultural appellation when it was federally authorized on April 3, 2001.  It is a 4,040-acre area in the southeastern portion of Yakima Valley AVA.  Six hundred acres were planted to vineyards that have developed over the past 30+ years to earn their owners top dollar for the premium grapes grown there.  (1,199 vineyard acres currently are planted; as of August 2015.)  Labels (designating these Red Mountain vineyards) create high consumer demand and satisfaction.  I wrote this piece after enjoying the company of a small group of the people at Hedges Red Mountain Winery and Vineyards — people who met with me to talk about their desert-land investment that is now one of Washington’s federally authorized American Viticultural Areas.  We sipped our wine, produced from nearby vineyards, and the story of the Red Mountain AVA’s beginnings unfolded.  Red Mountain People comes out of that casual conversation back in 2000, when appellation status was only a hope; today it is a reality.

6. Located on a southwest facing slope, the AVA is 3.5 hours from Seattle.
