If you are looking for a perfect afternoon in an idyllic seaside community in Newport Harbor California, head over to Balboa Island. Prior to 1906, the charming man-made-island was just a sandpit. Then a developer by the name of WIlliam S. Collins began dredging the channel around Snipe Island and depositing the sand onto the tidelands; resulting in Balboa Island.
There were 1300 lots for sale between 1909 and 1914. Waterfront lots sold for $600. In 1912, a narrow wooden bridge was built for foot traffic and horses. During the 1920s and 1930s, some Hollywood stars started sailing their boats into Newport Harbor including: Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn and John Barrymore. You may want to consider a vacationl rental in this charming area; contact http://www.abramscoastalproperties.com. I saw quite a view places for rent. Buying in paradise is incredibly expensive!
The island is packed with charming shops and restaurants along Marine and Agate Avenues. I loved my Swiss chesse and mushroom omlette at Wilma’s Patio. It went really well with my refreshing Poinsetta.
If you go to the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society, get a map and take a self-guided walking tour of Balboa Island’s historical houses build between 1912 and 1940 representing many architectural styles. Most of the historic houses are on Amethyst and Apolena Streets.
Save some room for a Balboa Island specialty; a chocolate-covered frozen banana.
