Sophisticated foodies should also make plans to attend the “Orvieto con Gusto” Food and Wine Festival. Check out the official website @ www.orvietocongusto.it. This festival is organized by the city of Orvieto in conjunction with the Association of Slow Food.

 Umbria is considered the belly button of Italy because it’s located in the center of the peninsula. It is protected by the Apennines and has no outlet to the sea but the region is home to the Tiber River. Historically, the Etruscans, Romans and the Catholic Church have contributed to the architectural splendor of Umbria. Visit the magnificent cathedrals in Umbria: Orvieto and Spoleto. Make a pilgrimage to the UNESCO World Heritage Franciscan Basilica of Assisi.

The  Perugia Jazz Festival, the Spoleto Festival, the Sagra Musicale Umbria in Perugia and the Festival della Nazioni are also annual events worth attending in Umbria. The culinary scene is dominated by the art of “norcino” and includes regional specialties like porchetta cooked on a spit, mazzafegato and capocollo. Umbrian wine options worth trying are Montefalco Sagrantino, Torgiano Rosso Riserva, Assisi and Orvieto.

There will be an open wine & cappuccino bar and lunch buffet at the  Italian Village . The Italian Village is the Oldest “Italian Restaurant in Chicago.” The restaurant has the largest wine cellar in the entire Midwest that holds over 45,000 bottles! They have also won the  Wine Spectator‘s “Grand Award” annually since 1984.

In 1981, Wine Spectator introduced the “Restaurant Awards” program. They review a restaurant’s wine lists on three levels: the Award of Excellence (basic), Best of Award of Excellence (second-tier), and the Grand Award (highest). I am in Amarone Heaven at the Village!

Every year in September, there is an annual Ferrari Festival with over 60 vintage Ferraris. There’s always plenty of food and wine.

WHEN: September 9, 2012

WHERE: Italian Village at 71 W. Monroe in Chicago

Tickets: Event is $30 per person

Proceeds support the New Lurie’s Children’s Memorial Hospital.

The Italian Village has been in the same family for three generations. Alfredo Capitanini, an Italian immigrant, opened The Italian Village in 1927. The menu once read: “ Spaghetti with Meatballs: 40 cents.” Alfredo’s wife, Ada, fed hungry patrons including performers from the Lyric Opera and Mayor Daley.

Chicago Originals Award

The second generation of Capitaninis, Ray, Frank and Ave then created ”the most celebrated wine list in the Midwest.” Here are some of the wines from Umbria.

The Village Menu

The Italian Village building in the Chicago Loop at 71 West Monroe houses a trio of restaurants with distinctive menus: acclaimed designer Jordan Mozer conceptualized upscale and contemporary Vivere; the charming retro Tuscan-inspired The Village; and La Cantina Enoteca with the ambiance of a wine cellar. For more information visit: www.italianvillage-chicago.com

During Chicago’s Restuarant Week 2012 you can check out Vivere’s innovative design, the Chef’s contemporary Italian cuisine and the Capitanini family’s immense wine cellar with 45,000 bottles. Vivere is offering a Chicago Restaurant Week 2012 Menu.

Italian Village Chefs at Italian Awards Event

Vivere is the most expensive restaurant in the building with a truly decked out dining room. I like the pumpkin-stuffed pasta and the duck breast with cherry sauce. Have some limoncello cheesecake if it’s on the menu. Vivere won numerous awards: “Best New Restaurant” from Esquire Magazine, DiRona Award from Wine Spectator and Ultimate Distinction by Wine Enthusiast. The Chef incorporates flavors from various regions of Italy. They also earned a Ospitalita Italiana Award for authentic Italian Cuisine.

Ospitalita Italiana Plaque for Italian Village

I love the alfresco dining ambience of the Village. It is located on the second floor. The dining room is covered with a canopy of Italian lights.

The Italian maitre d’ Frank Sgro is legendary! He has spent most of his life at this restaurant. He started in 1959 as a busboy at the Italian Village at the age of 17. A few weeks later, Frank Sgro became the Maitre D’ and has been there for over 50 years! Now that is a dedicated and loyal guy.

“Frank is like part of the family,” Al Capitanini said. “He remembers everybody and what they’ve ordered and where they’ve sat, and he works the room and knows where to seat people, and he does it very graciously.”

The Village Dining Room The Village Bar in Chicago

At the Italy-inspired, columned bar you can order the delightful shrimp appetizer. There are plenty of large portions of authentic Italian cuisine in the dining room. I love the Frutta di Mare and Scampi Casalinga.

Antipasti at Italian Village

I always order the shrimp and mushroom Casalinga for an appetizer with a glass of the Stefano Farina Italian Barbera d’Alba. For dessert, I love the Tiramisu. I can’t help it, I am a creature of habit.

The town of Assisi in Umbria is a fascinating place to view  Franciscan sites in the Perugia region of Umbria. Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Italy.

Assisi is the birth and burial place of St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order.  The Franciscans take the vow of poverty. St. Francis and St. Catherine are the patron saints of Italy. Assisi is located at the foot of Mount Subasio.  This medieval city is built on a hill. It is closely associated with disseminating the work of the Franciscan Order throughout the world; the universal message of peace and tolerance.

“Its medieval ensemble of artistic masterpieces, such as the Basilica of San Francesco and paintings by Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Giotto have significantly contributed to the development of Italian and European art and architecture.” UNESCO

St. Francis (1182-1226) was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on July 16, 1228.  The basilica was founded in 1228 after his canonization. Completed in 1253, it has an upper church and a lower church and is frequently visited by religious pilgrims from around the world. The frescoed basilica is a monument to St. Francis. The Franciscans offer free guided tours in English.

The Prayer of Saint Francis

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen”

Perugia, Italia

Perugia is the capital city of the  rustic central Italian region of  Umbria. Umbria is bordered by Tuscany to the west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south.

The topography of Umbria is dominated by the Apennines, with  the highest point in the region at Monte Vettore on the border of the Marche. It is the only Italian region that doesn’t have access to a  coastline or a common border with other countries.

Perugia is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval hill towns. In Centro Storico many of Perugia’s medieval streets are covered with arched brick bridges.

Sagra Musicale Umbra is one of the major musical events in the region. It has been held since 1937 and welcomes orchestra conductors from around the world. In September, Perugia’s Classico Rocca Paolina sets the stage for an exhibition of acoustic musical instuments.

There is also an International Wine Tourism Conference in Perugia. The 4th Annual International Conference & Workshop 2012 was held in the city of Perugia in Piazza Italia.

Perugia is a great Vino con Vista and Slow Food destination. Umbria has two red wines with the DOCG Italian wine classifications: Sagrantino di Montefalco and  Torgiano Rosso. These hearty red wines are grown in the hills south of Perugia

Ring in the New Year at the Umbria Winter Jazz Festival in Orvieto Italy

Facade of Orvieto Cathedral.
Image via Wikipedia

The delightful town of Orvieto is perched halfway between heaven and earth on a plateau over 900 feet above sea level. Take a funicular to the top of the cliff to visit the medieval historic center.

The 18th annual Umbria Winter Jazz Festival will be held between December 29th and January 2nd. The events include 400 artists with 250 concerts including performances by Chick Corea, Stefano Bollani and other notable jazz performers. Listen to Chick Corea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnSC0tRmya4 and Stefano Bollani http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18V_Leje19A. Tickets are available at www.umbriajazz.com.

Attend the outdoor Jazz Concert on New Year’s Eve. Stay for the Gospel Performance in front of the Cathedral on New Year’s Day. The concert will allow you to admire the town’s crowning jewel; the Romanesque-Gothic Duomo designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. The Cathedral was started in 1290 when Pope Nicholas IV blessed the first stone. The inside and the outside of the Duomo are covered with basalt and travertine stripes. The façade has glistening mosaics including “The Coronation of the Virgin” in the central gable. A  14th century rose-shaped stained glass window by Orcagna is surrounded by carved statues of saints. Lorenzo Maitani‘s bas-reliefs depict scenes from the Old and New Testament at the base of the pilasters on the front of the church.  The fourth pier on the right of the Duomo shows the damned and the Ressurection of the Flesh. These scenes are similar to Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.

Visit the Museum next door to the Duomo in the former Papal Palace to see sculptures by Andrea Pisano and Luca Signorelli’s beautiful “Mary Magdalene.” Orvieto’s shops are loaded with painted pottery. One of the local artists makes beautiful bowls and furniture carved from olive wood. There are plenty of cafes, wine bars and restaurants. Visit the Piazza del Popolo and try Orvieto’s famous D.O.C. wine.
