Gourmet Food Trucks offer meals on wheels. Street food vendors are popping up on street corners and parking lots around Chicago.

Click Here for a short Chicago Food Truck Video

Foodies swarm to locations around my Windy City to capture a myriad of delicious flavors offered by local chefs. When I was a kid, we waited for the ice-cream man, but now we search for the food trucks on Twitter!

A food-truck operation can get off the ground for under $150,000, while many restaurants spend more than $1 million on real estate and equipment to open their doors. Whenever these gourmet food trucks come to a stop, foodies swarm by finding their location on Twitter. Instead of roaming the streets of Chicago looking for Food Trucks, look for events where multiple Food Trucks gather for special events.

I can always enjoy a personal “Vino con Vista” and “Taste of Chicago” at a Food Truck event.  No tickets, no lines; just empanadas, tacos, cupcakes, meatballs, gourmet deli sandwiches and potato pancakes. Some trucks even offer treats for your favorite pets.

These are some of my favorite Chicago Food Trucks:

1. I have to say, I loved the little flaky, buttery pockets of love served by the “Empanada Truck”  named 5411 Empanadas. I convinced others to try the  traditional Argentine pastry pockets filled with beef and/or BBQ chicken  that were the best $1.99 that I have ever spent.

Empanada Food Trucks

2. I love the red-velvet cupcakes and the concept of the socially-responsible bakery run by Sweet Miss Giving’s.  The bakery has expanded its reach beyond its stand at the French Market. Specialty items include German chocolate brownies, oatmeal cookies and red velvet cupcakes. In line with the bakery’s social mission, the bakery employs between 10 and 20 formerly homeless people as interns as part of a transitional job-training program. More than half of the profits benerated benefit the Chicago House, a non-profit organization that helps formerly homeless men, women and children who are impacted by HIV/AIDS. Follow @SMGFoodTruck on Twitter for updates on the truck’s location and hours.

3. I am a big fan of tamales so I love the sleek Tamale Spaceship in the silver van that offers traditional Mexican fare with a side of avant-garde art. Five different flavors of tamales served daily are named after Mexico’s “stridentist” futuristic art movement. Start off with The Space Guacamole and make your way into the “Rajas Con Queso Tamale” (with poblanos and cheese and tomato sauce) or “No One’s Tamale De Pollo” in a green peanut mole sauce. For those who want something to sip streetside, order a bottle of Coke or Mexican coffee.

The Tamale Space Ship

4. Taquero Fusion has a Chicago skyline-decorated food truck that offers four types of tacos

. The soft tacos come in a  homemade tortilla filled with steak, chicken marinated in Puerto Rican-style seasoning, tilapia or vegetables. Choose a pineapple cucumber, chiptole or other salsa with your order. Yellow rice, jalapeno-infused rice and a chorizo-pinto bean mix are also offered. Season your taco with a variety of hot sauces and for dessert order a brownie and a bottle of Mexican Coke, made with real cane sugar.

5. The Meatyballs Truck served outstanding pulled pork meatballs. Who doesn’t love a mini roll of meat lovingly caressed in a flavorful bun? I’m Italian, so I have a genetic pre-disposition to these meaty treats!

Meaty Balls Food Truck in Chicago

6. Bergstein’s NY Deli Truck had some tasty BBQ beef and Chicken salad sliders, as well as tasty potato pancakes.

7. The Forever Yogurt Truck lets you choose up to three incredible toppings with their tasty frozen yogurt options.

Chicago Wine Tasting at Oenology Wine Room in the Intercontinental Hotel

MIAMI, FL - JUNE 06: Wine salesman, Fabian Qu...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

If you feel like a wine-tasting event but you can’t find one, here’s a solution. I suggest that you check out the Oenology Wine Bar at the Intercontinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. This incredible Hotel was the former home of the Medinah Athletic Club in Chicago. Like the Medinah Temple in Chicago, it was commissioned by the Shrine Organization. The building was designed by the architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. The cornerstone of the Medinah Athletic Club was laid on November 5, 1928. After your wine flight, take a tour of this gorgeous building.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago

One of the professionally-trained sommeliers at the Wine Spectator, award-winning Eno Wine Room at 505 N. Michigan Avenue will pamper you. They will offer a wine flight paired with the appropriate cheese and chocolate combination.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago

Since I like Pinot Noir, I opted for the “Pinot Envy” flight with a nice Oregon Pinot Noir. My flight included a 2008 Brandborg Bench Lands Pinot Noir from the Umpqua Valley in Oregon. I also had an opportunity to taste the 2009 Yamhill Valley Vineyard Pinot Blanc from Oregon and the 2008 Kenneth Volk Pinot St. George from the Calleri Vineyard in San Benito California.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Wine Flight

Once you have selected a wine flight, you can select your cheese selection to accompany your wine. My sommelier suggested the Challerhocker from Switzerland with an edible rind, a dense Ocooch Mountain sheep cheese from Wisconsin and the Barely Buzzed Cheddar from Utah rubbed with coffee grounds and lavender.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Cheese Flight

Now, it’s time to select your decadent chocolate desserts. Once again, just go with the recommendation of your professionally trained server and you won’t be disappointed. Have a Black Truffle Sea Salt, Macadamia Praline and Salted Chocolate Caramel. Now this is living!

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Chocolates

Of course, you can just select wine or cheese from the menu without opting for a personal “Pinot Envy” tasting party. Have a selection of cheese for $12 or just order a glass of wine.

Try a glass of red Amarone or Barbera D’Alba  from Italy. Those are 2 of my personal favorites from Italy.

If you want to learn more about wine pairing, here’s an informative video:
http://www.restonsunocosubway.com/Reston-Sunoco-Wine-and-Beer-cellar.htm
.

Wine tasting and wine pairing are interesting topics. Some of my favorite events in Chicago are wine dinners held at my favorite restaurants. Gibson’s on Rush Street is hosting a Duckhorn Vineyards Wine Dinner on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Salute!

Grasse in the French Riviera is the Perfume Capital of the World

Grasse

Image via Wikipedia

Grasse a medieval Provençal town in France that is associated with a billion-dollar perfume industry. The soil and climate are perfect for fields of jasmine, tuberose and hyacinth; the three queens of the flower kingdom essential to the perfume industry.

The Grasse region, in the south of France, had  local support from the skilled Montpellier faculty of pharmacy. They began to specialize in both aromatic raw materials and the actual production of perfume.

Grasse is one of France’s leading perfume producers. Today, local farmers cultivate flower fields to preserve this heritage of the fragrances of Provence.

Perfume Map of France

The fields of Grasse are not planted as extensively as they one were because of the  trend toward synthetic essences. Synthetic essences are often stronger than their natural counterparts. Grasse is still home to a handful of traditional perfumeries, including Fragonard.

Fragonard, the famous French parfumerie has shops in Grasse, Eze and Paris.  Before World War I, Eugène Fuchs, an entrepreneur and perfume affectionado, founded a perfumery on the French Riveria. His initial concept was to sell perfume and related products directly to tourists who were beginning to discover the charms of the French Riviera. The HOuse of Fragonard Shortly before World War I, Eugène Fuchs, an entrepreneur at heart seduced by the magic of perfume, decided to set up his own perfumery based on the novel concept of selling perfumery products directly to tourists who . Parfumerie Fragonard was opened in 1926. Eugène Fuchs chose to name it after the , Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), as a tribute to both the town of Grasse and to the refinement of 18th-century arts. Similarly, the choice of name expressed his desire to run his business in accordance with traditions

Perfumerie Fragonard was named after the famous Grasse-born Roccoco painter, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). Situated in a former 18th-century tannery in Grasse’s historic center, Fragonard opened its doors in 1926. Since then, Fragonard has been run by three subsequent generations of Fuch’s family. Today,  Agnès Costa-Webster and her sisters, Françoise and Anne Costa run the business that their great-grandfather, Eugène Fuchs  founded in 1926. Fragonard offers 35 fragrances sold in about 20 countries. Fragonard also exports its primary materials and supplies other prestigious perfumeries such as Elisabeth Arden in the United States.

Making Perfume in France

During the tour of Fragonard’s factory floor, you will walk past copper stills and burlap sacks of dried ingredients like patchouli. The guide will explain that fragrances are broken down into three notes. The top note — such as bergamot, or mandarin — is the scent that is first detected. Then comes the heart note: magnolia or jasmine, for example. Finally one smells the base note, like cedar and sandalwood, which can last up to 24 hours on the skin.

You will understand the importance of specially trained “Noses”. They are the creative artists that develope perfumes within the strict framework of detailed specifications. Hundreds of new perfumes are launched each year, but very few are able to survive beyond their first year.

After the Factory tour you can purchase some of the Fragonard products in the Gift Shop.  As an avid art collector, Jean-François Costa, Eugène Fuchs grandson acquired a large and unique collection of antique perfume related items and placed them in the museum. The heir to the company, established a museum on the premises in the 1970s. Walk through the museum to see  his collections of objects linked to the history of the perfumery. www.fragonard.com

Historically, bathing was considered to be dangerous and unhealthy. Many aristocrats used increasing amounts of perfume to conceal the embarrassing odors of their ill-washed bodies. Strong perfumes, such as amber, musk, jasmine and tuberose were popular because they covered-up bad odors. The fragrance used in perfumed gloves brought to France by Queen Catherine de’ Medici from her native Tuscany masked the unpleasant smell of poorly tanned leather. Strong demand for perfumed products imported from Italy, encouraged France to develop its own perfume industry.

The association of the leather industry and the perfume industry was so strong in France, that in 1656 the Corporation of Glovemakers and Perfumers was formed in France. Under Louis XIV, nicknamed “sweetest smelling king of all”, this guild was granted the monopoly of perfume distribution, which had previously belonged to apothecaries and druggists.

The French court was the undisputed model of refinement and elegance throughout Europe and eventually France became the home of the greatest perfume makers and most innovative perfumes. While Paris was the capital of trade in perfumed products, the town of Grasse, with its extensive fields of jasmine and rose, became the capital of production.

Eventually, crystal-makers, like Lalique and Baccarat, devoted their talents to designing elegant perfume bottles. Leading fashion designers jumped on the perfume band-wagon. Paul Poiret was the first designer to associate a perfume “Les Parfums de Rosine” with a line of women’s clothes.

I was recently watching a French movie about Coco Channel and Igor Stavinsky called “Coco and Igor”.  In one scene, Coco took a trip to Grasse to have the chemists develope a perfume for her. In 1925, Ernest Beaux created the famous fragrance Chanel N°5. Lanvin, Rochas, Patou, Ricci, Balmain and Dior, soon followed Coco Channel’s lead and developed designer fragrances. In the 1950s, men’s fragrances began to gain popularity.
