San Diego Little Italy Festa 2012

Sunrise over the San Diego marina

If you follow my posts, you know that I love Italy. I am also a big fan of Little Italy in San Diego. Little Italy is a trendy and charming section of downtown San Diego California and a great place for a “Vino con Vista.”

Get ready for one of the best festivals in Little Italy; San Diego’s 18th annual Little Italy Festa!

WHEN: Sunday, October 14, 2012 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

WHERE: India Street in Little Italy, San Diego

This is usually a great way to celebrate  Columbus Day in San Diego!

Here’s a video of Genoa in honor of Columbus Day for all my Italian Friends http://youtu.be/wujacerrsp8.

Here’s a San Diego video of what you can expect to  see in this coastal paradise http://youtu.be/beH01nziAIs

The streets will be covered with chalk art with a re-creation of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. You can “Mambo Italiano” as you listen to live entertainment. There will be plenty of food from the local Little Italy Restaurants.

The Little Italy Association of San Diego hosts the annual event www.littleitalysd.com.

Little Italy is close to the Embarcadero, the Gaslamp Quarter and the Marina District. The landmark sign on India Street, the main commercial corridor was dedicated at the 7th annual “Festa” on October 8, 2000. This neighborhood was settled by Italian immigrants in the 1920′s when they came to America to work in the Tuna Industry.

In Little Italy you can play bocci ball at Amici Park at the corner of State and Date streets. Visit the Firehouse Museum on 1st and B Street. Relax at Piazza Basilone with a fountain and memorial to fallen soldiers. Check out www.anthologysd.com for some live music and great food.

I love strolling down India street and reading all the banners that represent the famous Italian-American actors and their Academy Award winning performances. Al Pacino won Best Actor for” Scent of a Woman.”

Leonardo Di Caprio in Little Italy in San DIego

Frank Sinatra won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “From Here to Eternity”

Here’s the Entertainment Line-Up from the Press Room:

ALFIO

As Sydney-native ALFIO continues his travels reaching the shores of almost every continent, his Italian heritage never strays from his heart or his music. Dividing his time between home, America and overseas, he is rapidly gaining fans all over the world, becoming renowned for his mesmerizing live shows and powerful vocals.

When you first meet singer ALFIO, you’re not sure what to expect. He’s easy on the eyes with has a big genuine smile, an Australian accent, a crazy hairstyle and funny jokes. When he starts singing, it all falls into place and you realize that he has the whole package… something undeniable that simply cannot be forced or faked. Women and men alike all fall in love with his Voice. ALFIO’s vocals are clear and strong and he is often compared to Italian singers of yesteryear like legends Claudio Villa and Mario Lanza. With strength and vocal delivery, ALFIO shows his large vocal range as his voice glides effortlessly from pianissimo to forte, all the while maintaining complete control of each note. No matter how large the venue, he captivates his audiences during live shows with equal parts music journey, extraordinary vocals and comedic banter in between and sometimes during songs. He effortlessly brings all generations of music lovers together in one audience, and regardless of what language he sings in, all flow as one.

ALFIO will be performing at the Date Street Stage from 2:30pm-3:45pm.

Phat Cat Swinger

One of the best bands to dance to in the surrounding Los Angeles areas, Phat Cat Swinger was influenced by the classic sounds of Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, and Frank Sinatra and mixed with the new swingin’ sounds of such bands as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, and Brian Setzer. Phat Cat Swinger is a band filled with booming toms, walking bass lines, jumpin’ guitar rhythms, roaring horn lines and smooth vocals.

Born of the idea to bring fun, laughter, great music and entertain audiences with a collective showmanship between 9 band members, Phat Cat Swinger has grown to be one of the hottest live swing bands to hit Southern California’s underground scene.

With their rise in popularity Phat Cat Swinger has toured the country and performed shows with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Royal Crown Revue and even alongside The Coasters.

A big break for the band came when they made an appearance in Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” music video, where they performed in the beginning scene of the song dressed up to the nines in white suits; and they have also appeared as band members for the Jonas Brothers in their music video “Love Bug.”

The Phat Cat Swinger will be performing on the Date Street Stage from 4:30pm-6:00pm.

This iconic Michelin-starred restaurant has also received James Beard Foundation Awards. Charlie Trotter opened Charlie Trotter’s (Chicago) in 1987 with his father, Bob Trotter as his partner. The restaurant has been open for almost 25 years.

Charlie went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Political Science. After graduating from college, he traveled around the U.S. and Europe to dine at only the finest restaurants.

The figure who most impressed  Charlie during his culinary development was Fernand Point (of the famed Ma Gastronomie). Trotter never went to culinary school. His first cooking job was at Sinclair’s on the North Shore. He was a cook there and worked under Norman Van Aken and Carrie Nahabedian.

Chef Trotter established the Charlie Trotter Culinary Education foundation. This foundation supplies scholarships to students entering culinary programs. He also spearheaded the Excellence Program which allows high school students to come in and experience the cuisine of the restaurant.

Filini Bar and Restaurant in “Aqua” is the New Kid on the Block in Chicago

Filini on Columbus in Chicago

I love Filini! The two-story Italian Filini Restaurant is a relative new-comer to the Chicago Restaurant Scene.  The restaurant in located on Columbus Drive inside the elegant Radisson Blu Hotel.

Here’s are a few of the items that I enjoyed:

Antipasto: Zuppetta made with Wild mushroom soup, celeriac and crouton or

“Winter style caprese made with Buffalo milk mozzarella with baked pomodorini, yellow peppers, frisse and balsamic

Orecchiette at Filini

Secondi: Orecchiette made with home made pasta, lamb sausage, garlic, olive oil, broccolini, sundried tomatoe, pecorino crema or

Salmerino made with roasted artic char, thyme roaster parsnip, carrots, leeks and olivata sauce

Dolci: Sorbetto of lemon pudding, fruit compote and wild berry sorbet

The elegant Filini is located at 221 North Columbus Drive in the new Radisson Blu Hotel. The “Aqua“ Building is the structure with the wavy balconies. The high-rise is across from the Fairmont and near the Aon Building. The Building’s nautical theme represents the wave-like forms of the balconies and the tower’s proximity to Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.

The distinctive landmark skyscraper-hotel opened in November of 2011. Aqua is an 86 story mixed-use (residential & commercial) skyscraper in the Lakeshore East (east of Michigan Avenue) neighborhood in downtown Chicago. The lower floors house the elegant Radisson Blu Hotel; the only one in the US. I love the artwork on the way to the ballroom.

The building was designed by a team led by Jeanne Gang. This incredible  Skyscraper is the tallest in the world to have a woman as the lead architect.

It was designed by Loewenberg Architects and Studio/Gang/Architects at a cost of $475,000,000.

Inside the structure, Chef Christopher Fantoni has developed an intersting authentic Italian menu for Filini.

Felini

The menu includes the following categories: Affettati E Formaggi, Antipasti, Bruschette, Risotto E Paste, Secondi, Contorni, Piatti Del Giorno (Osso Bucco Milanese on Sundays) and Dolci. Order the Torta alla Ricotta, the Cioccolatissimo or the Filini Tiramisu.

On their regular menu, I love the grilled  20 ounce “Fiorentina”; A Porterhouse steak served with spinach, potatoes and garlic. Try the Gnocchi with a braised oxtail/vegetable ragu and perorino fondata. Top Picks for Chicago Restaurant Week 2012

Chocolate Bar at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago

For ten days starting February 17, 2012, you will have an opportunity to dine at over 200 Chicago Restaurants that offer three-course, Prix fixe menus starting at $22 for lunch and $33 for dinner. Visit www.eatitupchicago.com for the full list. Make reservations ASAP!!

Here’s are some of the restaurants that I dined at last year. I am including them as my favorites for the 5th annual event:

1. The impressive Lobby Restaurant of the Peninsula Hotel offered a starter buffet of roasted vegetables, crabmeat ceviche over a medley of fresh fruit and an assortment of cheeses and charcuteie options. I ordered the grilled salmon BLT for lunch and indulged in the incredible dessert bar with my latte.

2. Sepia is a delightful restaurant in Chicago. The dining room is located in a former 1890′s print studio and it is filled with photography memorabilia. Executive chef Andrew Zimmerman graduated first in his class at the prestigious French Culinary Institute and it is reflected in his Meditterranean influenced cuisine. The urban eatery has exposed brick walls and is located at 123 N. Jefferson Street in Chicago just east of the Kennedy Expressway between Washington and Randolf. I order the porchetta for starters followed by the grilled pork loin and frozen ginger parfait-YUM!

Restaurant Week Chicagao 2011

Sepia Restaurant in Chicago

3. NAHA is located at 500 N. Clark St. where executive chef Carrie Nahabedian merges her Armenian roots with Mediterranean influenced flavors that earned her a Michelin star. She was the former executive chef at the Four Seasons Properties in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara. For my first course I ordered the “Laughing Bird” Shrimp from Belize served over white corn grits. For my main course, I opted for the braised Mishima Ranch “Kobe” Wagyu Beef Brisket with Beluga lentils, bacon roasted parsnips and carrots. My dessert was a millefeuille of bananas with vanilla mousseline and salted caramel.

Restaurant Week Chicago 2011

4. David Burke”s Primehouse is located in the James Hotel at 616 N. Rush. For started I ordered the Surf and Turf Dumplings, two of them were filled with lobster mousse and the other two were filled with braised short-ribs. My entrée included a dry-aged classic fillet served with a side of mushrooms and mashed potatoes. For dessert, I enjoyed the pinapple upside down cake with rum caramel and sour cherry sorbet.

5. Le Colonial has one of my favorite French-Vietnamese inspired menus. It is located Rush Street and is housed in a two-story vintage townhouse  decorated in the millieu of 1920′s Siagon. I indulged in the Cha Gio for starters; these fried spring rolls were outstanding! Follow up with the “Bun Thit Nuong”;  BBQ pork served over angel-hair noodles. For dessert try, the crispy banana wonton.

Restaurant Week in Chicago

6. Il Mulino’s Italian menu at 1150 N. Dearborn is served in a lavish, historic Gold Coast mansion. The eggplant filled with ricotta is one of my favorites for starters. For the entree, I selected the Piccata di Vitello al Limone and my dolci option suggestion is Torta di Formaggio; cheesecake with whipped cream and berries.

7. The Atwood Cafe in the loop on State Street is one of my favorite dining rooms and is located in the elegantly-renovated Hotel  Burnham across from Macy’s on Washington. This dining room is one of my favorites in Chicago. They  offeried the regular menu with a three-course option for Restaurant Week. I loved the Ahi Tuna appetizer and they serve one of the best pork chops in town. The chocolate dessert was decadent.

8. Blackbird’s award-winning restaurant at 619 W. Randolf offered seared scallops for a starter with a roasted chicken entree and a choclate ganache dessert.

9. Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab at 60 E. Grand is the Chicago outpost of Miami’s legendary Joe’s Stone Crab. For dinner have a cup of chowder of bisque with crab claws or steak and don’t leave without indulging in the famous key lime pie for dessert.

10. This year, I’m torn between Terzo Piano at the Art Institute, Rosebud Prime in the Loop and Aria on Chicago’s east side at the Fairmont Hotel  http://www.ariachicago.com.

But I’m definitely going to Piccolo Sogno, one of my all time favorites Italian restaurants in Chicago!
