Last year, I fell in love with Cass Winery’s Reserve and had a case shipped to my home from the winery. Try the Cooper’s Hawk Barbera; it’s from a local winery near Naperville.

Italian neighborhoods in Chicago celebrate summer with annual traditions in historic Italian neighborhoods. Taylor Street was the port-of-call for many Italians who immigrated to Chicago from the shores of southern Italy. This landmark Southern Italian neighborhood hosts an annual “Festa Italiana” from August 9-12, 2012.

They anticipate 55,000 visitors to the historic Italian neighborhood over the weekend and many will be Italian American. Many suburban Italians, whose roots trace back to Taylor Street maintain a regular pilgrimage to “the old neighborhood” on the near-west side.

Many businesses have been in this neighborhood for many generations like Chicago’s legendary Gonnella bread family.

Alex Dana runs the famed Rosebud Chain in Chicago and has earned his own street sign in the neighborhood. The Taylor Street location has an incredible outdoor space for dining alfresco.

Another one of my favorite Taylor Street eateries is Tuscany with multiple locations throughout the Chicagoland area. Try the Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich or the Pork Chop Vesuvio.

The festival is a mecca for foodies who want to enjoy Italian cuisine and listen to live entertainment on multiple stages.

This weekend when you attend the annual event on Taylor Street on the near-west side of Chicago, you can enjoy treats from the food booths of legendary establishments like Rosebud, Pompei and Francesca’s as well as new-comers like Ethyl’s Beer and Wine Dive.

Trattoria-style restaurants, the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and the historic Roman Catholic churches like the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii and Holy Family populate Chicago’s most popular Little Italy precinct.

Visit Joe DiMaggio Piazza with the fountain. Enjoy a frozen lemonade from Mario’s Italian Lemonade or an Italian Beef sandwich. I enjoyed the “Juicy” (dipped in gravy) combination beef/sausage from The Patio food booth and the baked clams from Pompei.  All of my friends that are not from Chicago make fun of the way I say “saaaa-sage.”

Buy some olive oil from the “Italian Iron Chef”. The Conte di Savoia Italian grocer and deli are offering meatball sandwiches, Italian subs and Italian desserts. Scafuri’s bakery will all be offering tasty cookies. Don’t forget to take a stroll in Arrigo (Peanut) Park to see the statue of Columbus.

Last year, I went on Thursday night so I could see  the “Bronx Wanderers” at the Italia Stage.  On Sunday night, attendees listened to the Rat Pack Tribute to Frank, Dean and Sammy. There is also a Rock Stage with live entertainment.

You can see the Bronx Wanderers and James Darren!

Vino Con Vista Chicago from NoMI at the Park Hyatt on Michigan Aveunue

Enjoy a glorious Vino Con Vista of Chicago from the NoMI Restaurant on the seventh floor of the Park Hyatt Chicago at 800 N. Michigan Avenue. From the street, the glass and steel facade shows the floor to ceiling windows. I love the panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the historic Water Tower from this dining room.

The Park Tower skyscraper , located at 800 North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, was completed in 2000. It structure has 70 floors. It was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Lucien Lagrange Architects. The Park Tower is a mixed use tower; the lower floors of the building are the Park Hyatt Hotel and the upper levels contain luxury condominiums.

This was an excellent choice for Chicago Restaurant Week 2012.  The last time I had lunch at NoMI, I enjoyed the following meal: a seasonal field greens salad with roasted beets, manchego cheese with walnut vinaigrette dressing as a first course; roasted Amish chicken served over beluga lentils and for dessert, an assortment of colorful “Le Mac” cookies including passion banana, lime mint and milk chocolate Grand Marnier. I ordered a 2008 Meiomi Belle Glos Pinot Noir  from Sonoma that was divine.

Check out the Super Bowl Chili Recipe on Executive Chef Ryan La Roche’s Blog. Make your reservations for lunch or brunch at www.nomirestaurant.com.

The NoMI Kitchen at Park Hyatt Chicago will host a special culinary event as part of their “Chicago Masters of Food and Wine” program. The event will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. At this event, participants will learn about goat cheese from artisanal cheese purveyor Judy Solomon. This interactive experience will be held in the wine cellar. Contact the restaurant for more information and reservations.

Foodies Flock to Pelago Ristorante on Delaware Place in Chicago

There are many outstanding restaurants in Chicago‘s Gold Coast where we normally spent special celebratory dinners. But for my son’s birthday we decided to try a new place in Streeterville. We made reservations at Pelago www.pelagorestaurant.com at 201 East Delaware in the boutique-style Hotel Raffaello.

I lover Streeterville! The elegant neighborhood is bounded by the river on the south, the Magnificent Mile portion of Michigan Avenue on the west and Lake Michigan on the north and east. It’s probably one of the best walking neighborhoods in the city because it is so close to so many of the City’s finest destinations. This charming restaurant is tucked away in one of the attractive, historic buildings on Delaware.

You can dine in the intimate contemporary room designed by the Chef’s architect wife Kim, with a gorgeous  mother-of-pearl tiled fireplace. If the weather permits, make a reservation for the seasonal outdoor terrace.

You don’t have to travel to Italy to get what Italians consider legendary authentic Italian food. Michelin-starred Italian Chef/Owner Mauro Mafrici recently won an award from the Italian Government for his “Authentic” Italian Menu called the “Ospitalita Italiana” Quality Seal.

Pelago Italian Ristorante in Chicago

The up-scale Italian restaurant has a quaint outdoor terrace nestled on historic East Delaware Place.  Pelago is in the heart of Streeterville‘s sophisticated neighborhood just east of the prestigious Water Tower Shopping District on Michigan Avenue‘s magnificent mile. It is within walking distance to one of my favorite Chicago summer distinations; Oak Street  Beach.

Mauro  hit a Grand Slam with his incredible six-course ”Vertical Tasting Menu.”  We had an opportunity to try some ravioli di funghi, lasagna alla Bolognese, gnocchi di patate al gorgonzola e noci, and risotto alle verdure. We also sampled four meat offerings, a plethora of seafood options and some remarkable desserts. Pelago has an impressive wine list. It was definitely a meal fit for a king! I think we’ll be celebrating many birthdays at Pelago.

Happy Birthday Chicago! Uncork your favorite bottle of wine or champagne and toast to Chicago’s 175th birthday on March 4, 2012 as you listen to Frank Sinatra sing “My Kind of Town“; originally part of the musical score for Robin and the 7 Hoods, a 1964 musical film starring several members of the Rat Pack.

Chicago is famous for many things including gangsters like Al Capone and the city definitely has some offers that you can’t refuse:

Chicago is also famous for sports teams: Bears, Bulls, Hawks, Cubs and Sox. We have had pretty good record for start-ups: Kraft, Motorola, Baxter, Sara Lee and don’t forget Groupon just to name a few.

Chicago is home to a plethora of superlatives: our higher learning institutons are world-class with some of the best business schools in the world like University of Chicago and Northwestern. The city is brimming with world-class chefs and we have some of the best restaurants in the world like Charlie Trotters and Alinea.

But one or our most endearing and enduring blessings is our world-class architecture! This weekend to celebrate Chicago’s 175th birthday, some of her architectural shining stars will turn blue including: the WIllis Tower, the Trump Tower, the Merchandise Mart and the Prudential Building.

Chicago‘s Columbian Exposition in the 1890′s spawned a flourishing legacy of global architectural pre-eminence and outstanding architecture in Chicago. Daniel Burnham’s passion for Beaux Arts priniciples of design generated a flurry of world-class structures. Chicago architects and structural engineers are still staking claims to global architectural marvels.

Bill Baker is a structural engineer who works at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill‘s (SMO) Chicago office in the landmark, 17 story Sante Fe Building. He can be credited with more supertall buildings of over 1000 feet than any other structural engineer in the world including the Trump Tower. The “Burl Khalifa” in Dubai is world’s tallest building at 160 stories. It is almost twice as tall as the building formerly known as the Sears Tower in Chicago. Bill was instrumental in designing The Burl with architect Adrian Smith at SMO.

Two of my favorite vintage buildings include the majestic Wrigley Building and the Gothic Revival Tribune building located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River.

The distinctive clock tower of the Wrigley Building reminds me of Big Ben in London. There are 250,000 glistening glazed terra cotta tiles covering the classical structure that was completed in 1924 by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. Quite appropriate for the great “White City.” The beautiful neo-gothic Tribune Tower is across the street from the Wrigley building. The 26 foot Sculpture of Marilyn Monroe is next to the Tribune Tower.

I love the juxtaposition of the classic architecture with the modern architecture of buildings like the sleek Trump Tower. There’s a great view of the Wrigley Clock from Trump’s 16th floor restaurant aptly named “Sixteen.” They have an outstanding Sunday Brunch so why not celebrate Chicago’s Birthday party there!

Chocolate Bar at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago

For ten days starting February 17, 2012, you will have an opportunity to dine at over 200 Chicago Restaurants that offer three-course, Prix fixe menus starting at $22 for lunch and $33 for dinner. Visit www.eatitupchicago.com for the full list. Make reservations ASAP!!

Here’s are some of the restaurants that I dined at last year. I am including them as my favorites for the 5th annual event:

1. The impressive Lobby Restaurant of the Peninsula Hotel offered a starter buffet of roasted vegetables, crabmeat ceviche over a medley of fresh fruit and an assortment of cheeses and charcuteie options. I ordered the grilled salmon BLT for lunch and indulged in the incredible dessert bar with my latte.

2. Sepia is a delightful restaurant in Chicago. The dining room is located in a former 1890′s print studio and it is filled with photography memorabilia. Executive chef Andrew Zimmerman graduated first in his class at the prestigious French Culinary Institute and it is reflected in his Meditterranean influenced cuisine. The urban eatery has exposed brick walls and is located at 123 N. Jefferson Street in Chicago just east of the Kennedy Expressway between Washington and Randolf. I order the porchetta for starters followed by the grilled pork loin and frozen ginger parfait-YUM!

3. NAHA is located at 500 N. Clark St. where executive chef Carrie Nahabedian merges her Armenian roots with Mediterranean influenced flavors that earned her a Michelin star. She was the former executive chef at the Four Seasons Properties in Beverly Hills and Santa Barbara. For my first course I ordered the “Laughing Bird” Shrimp from Belize served over white corn grits. For my main course, I opted for the braised Mishima Ranch “Kobe” Wagyu Beef Brisket with Beluga lentils, bacon roasted parsnips and carrots. My dessert was a millefeuille of bananas with vanilla mousseline and salted caramel.

4. David Burke”s Primehouse is located in the James Hotel at 616 N. Rush. For started I ordered the Surf and Turf Dumplings, two of them were filled with lobster mousse and the other two were filled with braised short-ribs. My entrée included a dry-aged classic fillet served with a side of mushrooms and mashed potatoes. For dessert, I enjoyed the pinapple upside down cake with rum caramel and sour cherry sorbet.

5. Le Colonial has one of my favorite French-Vietnamese inspired menus. It is located Rush Street and is housed in a two-story vintage townhouse  decorated in the millieu of 1920′s Siagon. I indulged in the Cha Gio for starters; these fried spring rolls were outstanding! Follow up with the “Bun Thit Nuong”;  BBQ pork served over angel-hair noodles. For dessert try, the crispy banana wonton.

6. Il Mulino’s Italian menu at 1150 N. Dearborn is served in a lavish, historic Gold Coast mansion. The eggplant filled with ricotta is one of my favorites for starters. For the entree, I selected the Piccata di Vitello al Limone and my dolci option suggestion is Torta di Formaggio; cheesecake with whipped cream and berries.

7. The Atwood Cafe in the loop on State Street is one of my favorite dining rooms and is located in the elegantly-renovated Hotel  Burnham across from Macy’s on Washington. This dining room is one of my favorites in Chicago. They  offeried the regular menu with a three-course option for Restaurant Week. I loved the Ahi Tuna appetizer and they serve one of the best pork chops in town. The chocolate dessert was decadent.

8. Blackbird’s award-winning restaurant at 619 W. Randolf offered seared scallops for a starter with a roasted chicken entree and a choclate ganache dessert.

9. Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab at 60 E. Grand is the Chicago outpost of Miami’s legendary Joe’s Stone Crab. For dinner have a cup of chowder of bisque with crab claws or steak and don’t leave without indulging in the famous key lime pie for dessert.

10. This year, I’m torn between Terzo Piano at the Art Institute, Rosebud Prime in the Loop and Aria on Chicago’s east side at the Fairmont Hotel  http://www.ariachicago.com.

But I’m definitely going to Piccolo Sogno, one of my all time favorites Italian restaurants in Chicago!

Chicago Loop is the Perfect Setting for Superman’s “Men of Steel” Movie

The League of Supermen (Part Seven)

I love the Chicago Loop. When I was a little girl, my Dad and I would take the “El” downtown and go to Trader Vic‘s in the historic Palmer House Hilton hotel on East Monroe Street. I loved the skyscrapers and the historic buildings like the 17-story Boston Store Building at 22 West Madison Street, the Mentor Building and the Palmer House.

This is the perfect setting for the new Superman Movie that will be released in 2013. In September, filming for “Man of Steel” the new Superman movie took place in Chicago’s Loop. The film stars Henry Cavill as mild-mannered journalist Clark Kent who is transformed into Superman. Kevin Costner plays the superhero’s father and Diane Lane will portray his mom. The film is expected to feature the Loop’s Chicago Board of Trade Building and the Willis Tower.

The facade of the Chicago Board of Trade Building located at 141 W. Jackson will be used as “The Daily Planet” in the movie. This 1930′s building designed by Holabird and Root is known for its art deco architecture, sculptures and large-scale stone carving. It has large trading floors. A three-story art deco statue of Ceres, goddess of agriculture caps the building.

The Daily Planet is a fictional broadsheet newspaper that is Clark Kent’s employer in the tales of Superman. The building’s original features were based upon the AT&T Huron Road Building  in Cleveland, Ohio. The Daily Planet is based in Metropolis and employs Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen. The Editor In Chief is Perry White.

Sometimes, my Dad and I would dine at  the Berghoff Restaurant for lunch or the Walnut Room in Marshall Fields. I loved strolling down State Street at Christmas to see the lavishly decorated windows.

Chicago Says Farewell to the “Forever Marilyn” Monroe Sculpture

Cover of

Cover of The Seven Year Itch

Chicago says farewell to the “Forever Marilyn” Monroe Sculpture that towers 26 feet over The Windy City on the Magnificent Mile. Chicagoans will only have a few more days to peek under Marilyn Monroe’s skirt. The 25-foot-tall statue of the iconic actress is slated to leave its spot along Chicago’s. in her famous pose from the film

Marilyn Monroe in Chicago

Chicago‘s Windy City has immortalized Marilyn Monroe with a mammoth 26 foot, 17 ton sculpture by Seward Johnson on Michigan Avenue. The bronze and stainless steel sculpture depicts in a pose from “The Seven Year Itch” with Tom Ewell. The sculpture is next to the Tribune Tower and is managed by www.sculpturefoundation.org.

Who could resist taking photos of the fabulous sculpture. The 2011 sculpture is based upon the photo of Hollywood’s bombshell, Marilyn Monroe standing over a subway vent  in the 1955 movie “The Seven Year Itch“. This  American film is based on a three-act play by George Axelrod. The film was co-written and directed by Billy Wilder and starred Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell. I also love Seward Johnson‘s “Unconditional Surrender” Sculpture in San Diego.

Chicago’s ”Forever Marilyn” sculpture depicts one of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Marilyn’s is standing on a subway grate as her white dress  is blown above her knees by a passing train. It’s humorous and interesting to see that most people in my Windy City want to look under her dress when getting their picture taken.

Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson. She was born in 1926 and raised as Norma Jeane Baker. She spent much of her childhood in foster homes. Marilyn Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. She died on August 5, 1962.

The 17-ton Forever Marilyn” in the Pioneer Plaza on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile has attracted many visitors, some controversy and even vandalism.

How times have changed; there’s no thong for Marilyn Monroe. She’s wearing gramma undies!  The sculpture sill stay in Chicago until the Spring of 2012.

If you’re downtown, stop and take a photo with Marilyn in the Windy City before she moves on May 7, 2012. The statue will be transported to The Sculpture Foundation, a non-profit agency that promotes public access to art.

Chicago Wine Tasting at Oenology Wine Room in the Intercontinental Hotel

If you feel like a wine-tasting event but you can’t find one, here’s a solution. I suggest that you check out the Oenology Wine Bar at the Intercontinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. This incredible Hotel was the former home of the Medinah Athletic Club in Chicago. Like the Medinah Temple in Chicago, it was commissioned by the Shrine Organization. The building was designed by the architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. The cornerstone of the Medinah Athletic Club was laid on November 5, 1928. After your wine flight, take a tour of this gorgeous building.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago

One of the professionally-trained sommeliers at the Wine Spectator, award-winning Eno Wine Room at 505 N. Michigan Avenue will pamper you. They will offer a wine flight paired with the appropriate cheese and chocolate combination.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago

Since I like Pinot Noir, I opted for the “Pinot Envy” flight with a nice Oregon Pinot Noir. My flight included a 2008 Brandborg Bench Lands Pinot Noir from the Umpqua Valley in Oregon. I also had an opportunity to taste the 2009 Yamhill Valley Vineyard Pinot Blanc from Oregon and the 2008 Kenneth Volk Pinot St. George from the Calleri Vineyard in San Benito California.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Wine Flight

Once you have selected a wine flight, you can select your cheese selection to accompany your wine. My sommelier suggested the Challerhocker from Switzerland with an edible rind, a dense Ocooch Mountain sheep cheese from Wisconsin and the Barely Buzzed Cheddar from Utah rubbed with coffee grounds and lavender.

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Cheese Flight

Now, it’s time to select your decadent chocolate desserts. Once again, just go with the recommendation of your professionally trained server and you won’t be disappointed. Have a Black Truffle Sea Salt, Macadamia Praline and Salted Chocolate Caramel. Now this is living!

Eno Wine Room in Chicago Chocolates

Of course, you can just select wine or cheese from the menu without opting for a personal “Pinot Envy” tasting party. Have a selection of cheese for $12 or just order a glass of wine.

Try a glass of red Amarone or Barbera D’Alba  from Italy. Those are 2 of my personal favorites from Italy.

If you want to learn more about wine pairing, here’s an informative video: http://www.restonsunocosubway.com/Reston-Sunoco-Wine-and-Beer-cellar.htm.

Wine tasting and wine pairing are interesting topics. Some of my favorite events in Chicago are wine dinners held at my favorite restaurants. Gibson’s on Rush Street is hosting a Duckhorn Vineyards Wine Dinner on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Salute!

Chicago’s Magnificent Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain in Chicago, Illinois.
Image via Wikipedia

I am a Travel Junkie who loves to travel around the world. I can’t resist taking pictures of  beautiful fountains; I find them so intriguing.

One of the most magnificent fountains in Chicago is the Buckingham Fountain. The fountain was designated as a Chicago landmark on August 30, 2000.

Buckingham Fountain in Chicago

It is located at the intersection of Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive, just west of south Lake Shore Drive in Grant Park. Grant Park is a popular venue for Chicago Festivals like Jazz Fest and the Windy City Wine Festival.

The park was an integral part of Daniel Burnham‘s 1909 city planning efforts that involved integrating a series of projects into Chicago’s  lakefront.  He envisioned Chicago as a “Paris on the Prairie” with French-inspired public works projects and beautiful fountains.

Burnham’s magical vision generated our horizontal kingdom with gorgeous skyscrapers. Chicago’s magnificent skyline, monuments and sculptures are a result of the convergence of vision and technology.

Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain is one of the largest fountains in the world. Any time of the day or night, people converge upon the fountain to take pictures. It’s a favorite spot for newlyweds.

Chicago Wine Festival at Buckingham Fountain

The pink marble fountain was designed by beaux-arts architect and city planner Edward H. Bennett who was also involved in Burnham’s Plan of Chicago and the construction of Grant Park.

Bennett’s office was located in the penthouse of the Santa Fe building (pictured below) with the large “Santa Fe” logo on the roof, at 80 E. Jackson in Chicago. From his eagle’s nest view, he could supervise the construction of Grant Park. The 17-story office building is located on the Historic Michigan Boulevard District. The Santa Fe building has distinctive round porthole  windows along the cornice.  The center of the building features a  lightwell that was covered with a skylight in the 1980s.

Buckingham Fountain and the Santa Fe Building

From Bennett’s penthouse office, he could also supervise the construction of   the Buckingham Fountain and the original ornamental Peristyle. A reproduction of the Peristyle majestically crowns  Millennium Park.

Peristyle in Chicago

The Peristyle (pictured above), is a replica of the curving row of paired Greek columns that were originally on the corner of Grant Park near Michigan and Randolph from 1917 to 1953. The statues (pictured below), were created by the French sculptor Marcel F. Loyau. The whimsical sea-horses depict mid-western states.

Buckingham Fountain Sea-horse Statues

The fountain was dedicated on August 26, 1927 and was constructed at a cost of $750,000.  Water streams through the fountain’s 193 jets. The design looks like a wedding cake and it was inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles. The central structure allegorically represents Lake Michigan and it is surrounded by four sea-horses. Each sea-horse represents the states that surround Lake Michigan: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana.

The fountain is operational from April to October with interesting water shows  every hour on-the-hour that last for 20 minutes. During the show, water spews from the central jet. The center jet shoots up vertically up to 150 feet.  There are lovely evening light shows.  After dusk, these shows are choreographed with lights and music. The last show begins at 10:00 p.m. During the winter, the fountain is decorated with holiday lights.
